Exploring Art in New Mexico: Heidi Darr-Hope and Eileen Blyth’s Creative Retreat

Stormwater Studio resident artists Heidi Darr-Hope and Eileen Blyth, along with fellow artist Ellen E. Yaghjian, wife of David Yaghjian, recently participated in the week-long Drawing Canyon, Sage, and Sky Artist Retreat. This enriching experience was hosted by University of South Carolina Professor and artist Sara Schneckloth in New Mexico.

During the retreat, they trekked into the stunning Walatowa Red Rocks and Slot Canyon, gathering images and sensations from the breathtaking landscapes. They also dedicated time to making paints and pastels and creating drawings that beautifully translate the experience of the landscape into material, body, and form.

These images capture their experience on the hike and during the drawing tutorial in New Mexico, reflecting the beauty and inspiration of their surroundings.

Exploring Cyanotype Printing with Pat Gilmartin

Pat Gilmartin, a resident artist at Stormwater Studios, is continuing to explore the possibilities of cyanotype printing.

Cyanotype photography is a unique, camera-less technique that involves laying objects on paper coated with a solution of iron salts. This paper is then exposed to UV light and washed with water to create stunning white and Prussian blue images.

Recently, Pat attended a workshop focused on the advanced techniques of bleaching and toning cyanotypes. These processes alter the familiar Prussian blue hues of Cyanotypes, introducing an entirely new level of complexity to her prints.

Pat’s exploration of these techniques highlights her dedication to traditional cyanotype printing and can be seen in her recent works. If you want to get a closer glimpse of her work, please schedule a time to stop by. You can reach her at [email protected].

Stay tuned for more updates on Pat Gilmartin’s artistic journey and her captivating cyanotype creations!
