Exploring the Beauty of Native Plants with Girl Scouts

Last Monday, a group of twenty Girl Scouts were on a hike for Conservation Week, and their leader asked if they could come see the Stormwater Garden. We talked about how native plants are a part of a healthy ecosystem. Several of them quickly recognized milkweed and knew that monarchs depend on milkweed for survival.

When the girls reached the pollinator gardens behind the studios, there were many expressions of “native plants are beautiful!” It was such a pleasure to pause and enjoy the garden with these bright young girls.

This coming year, I will focus on the importance of native plants in habitat restoration. I hope that, like the scouts’ leader, other scouts and nature lovers will ask me to put down my trowel and give them a guided tour of our gardens.
