USC School of Visual Art and Design Artist in Residence, Abby Short

Meet Abby Short, a Charleston native and studio arts major at the University of South Carolina Honors College, class of 2027. Abby’s passion for oil painting and storytelling has led her to explore a blend of visual and written expression through her current residency at USC’s School of Visual Art and Design (SVAD). This program marks her first opportunity to develop a comprehensive body of work in a collaborative residency setting.

Abby is working on large-scale oil paintings that explore imagined pasts inspired by a speculative fiction story she’s developing. She describes the process as “nostalgically vulnerable” and is eager to share this exploration with fellow artists at Stormwater Studios and beyond. Abby envisions a future where her skills in visual and narrative arts converge, aspiring to become a graphic novelist or visual storyteller in a news magazine.

Stay connected with Abby and follow her journey through her website and social media: visit her website at abbylila.com and find her on Instagram (@abby.lila), Facebook (Abby Short), and LinkedIn (Abigail Short).
