October Events at Stormwater Studios

“Baketsu Pearls: 30 Years of Pottery” by Betsy Kaemmerlen
Join us for a special retrospective exhibition celebrating 30 years of pottery by Betsy Kaemmerlen at Stormwater Studios, running from Wednesday, October 2 to Sunday, October 6. Betsy began her journey with clay in 1994 and has evolved from wheel-thrown pottery to creating hand-built forms. Her functional pieces are known for their intricate textures and glazes, inspired by the ancient technique of using clay to protect cooking baskets.
The exhibition will feature collaborative works, pieces from private collections, and new creations, including tiny teapots, vases, and Ikebana vessels. Celebrate Betsy’s artistic journey at the opening reception on Wednesday, October 2, from 4 PM to 7 PM.
Stormwater Studios is located at 413 Pendleton Street, Columbia, SC 29201, with gallery hours from 11 AM to 3 PM, Wednesday to Sunday. Visit our neighbors, Lewis + Clark Studios and One Eared Cow Glass, while you’re in the area!

“Out of Our Minds” by Clay Burnette and Rick Smoak
From October 16- 27, Stormwater Studios will exhibit “Out of Our Minds”, an exhibition featuring the works of fiber artist Clay Burnette and photographer Rick Smoak. The show brings together their unique perspectives on nature’s beauty, whether through Burnette’s intricate coiled baskets made from longleaf pine needles or Smoak’s striking photography.
Burnette, a self-taught basketmaker with nearly 50 years of experience, has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Smithsonian Craft Show. His work stretches the boundaries of traditional basket making, blending simplicity and complexity in form and texture. Burnette will also showcase his handwoven scarves.
Smoak, whose photography career spans over 40 years, blends traditional and digital techniques to create evocative images of South Carolina’s natural beauty. His work explores both black-and-white and color compositions, capturing moments as seen through his mind’s eye.
The exhibition runs daily from 11 AM to 3 PM, with an artist reception on Thursday, October 17, from 4 to 8 PM.
