Nita Moore is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent oil paintings at Stormwater Studios. This is Nita’s first show at Stormwater; she last exhibited in Columbia at Gallery 80808 in 2016. Her work has evolved since then to include more plein air and imaginative work. Nita seeks to convey an unspoken beauty through her work, transforming the essence of material and atmosphere into paint.
This exhibition focuses predominantly on landscape paintings, featuring both plein air studies and studio works, as well as works drawn from imagination. For Nita, the vast expanses and ever-shifting atmosphere of the landscape make it the most exhilarating genre of painting to explore. These paintings are inspired by extensive time spent on the Carolina coast, recent travels to England, and Nita’s local environment around Wisconsin.
The exhibition also features several still life paintings, marking a new direction in Nita’s long-standing engagement with the genre. Unlike her earlier works, these recent pieces were created in plein air, capturing the immediacy and spontaneity of the outdoor environment. This shift infuses the still lifes with a fresh energy, reflecting an evolution in her artistic approach.
Nita is a prolific portrait artist whose recent works are included in the exhibition. As the founder and co-director of a weekly portrait group that works exclusively from live models, she consistently hones her observational skills through this immersive practice. Capturing both the essence of humanity and the unique likeness of an individual is a demanding challenge, but one that she finds deeply rewarding.
Nita is a native of Columbia, SC, and resides in Milwaukee, WI. She studied classical drawing and painting at the Water Street Atelier in New York. Drawing serves as the cornerstone of her work, while color plays an equally vital role. She is particularly inspired by the humanistic naturalism of Rembrandt, the tonalism of Inness and Dewing, and the painterly bravura of Turner.
